A special all-star game designed to recognize basketball talent from small Texas schools. The
Texas Roundup focuses on locating the hidden talents at these smaller schools and giving them the exposure and opportunity to play collegiate ball. University and college coaches have made the event a must on their schedules. And deservedly so, Not only is the best talent in the state put on one court at one venue, but the hospitality room alone, filled with the best pastries, sandwiches and other home made dishes, is enough to bring a crowd.
Grandview bankers Robert Stewart & Larry Burns would often meet at the bank around 6:00am, turn on the Norm Hitzges sports talk show and read the sports pages from the previous day. It was one such morning in April 1999 that Stewart was reading about an all-star basketball game and asked the question to Burns, Why can’t we do this? With both bankers active in the civic community and interested in sports, the First State Bank of Grandview became headquarters for the development of a special all-star game designed to recognize basketball talent from small Texas schools. The two set about creating an event that would be unequaled in both talent and hospitality.
With a new and beautiful high school gymnasium, the Grandview ISD quickly agreed to host the games. Needing a facility to host a banquet luncheon, the bankers turned to Linda Beaumont, owner of the prestigious Beaumont Ranch in Grandview. Ms. Beaumont not only offered her special events complex but also agreed to serve as the event’s largest sponsor and host to the coaches for the weekend.
The “Texas Roundup” has become the most prestigious basketball showcase in Texas. the
Texas Roundup is an invitational event for unsigned senior athletes from Class 1A, 2A and 3A high schools in Texas. Organized and directed by the Greater Grandview Chamber of Commerce, the Zebra Roundup is designed to bring recognition to basketball players from small schools.
To ensure the event selects the most talented and deserving seniors, the organizers created a nomination process allowing every high school coach to nominate players. In addition, the selection committee has established ties with the state’s top recruiters. Several college coaches and geographically selected high school coaches provide input in the selection process.
With over twenty-five community volunteers working on the
Texas Roundup, the group works to ensure that every detail of the event is spectacular. From the uniforms, to the luncheon, to the souvenir programs, to the introductions, to the half-time entertainment, the
Texas Roundup is a daylong celebration for the athletes and their families.
The Texas Roundup is a special event designed to honor high school athletes for their commitment to sport.
